Finding the awesome at 103m below sea level
For divers Gavin Moffat and Ingrid Lotze, life without adventure would have no meaning. They describe the dive of their lives sharing lessons about overcoming fear, setting goals, co-dependence and self-reliance, planning, living in the moment and of course, the unbridled pursuit of the awesome.
Our world is obsessed with 'more' but it's overwhelming us. There's "No Space for Just in Case - not only in diving, but in how we lead, communicate, and build lives that work for us.
Using the love of SCUBA diving to learn about taking calculated risks in business and thriving in challenging times: Technical divers test the limits, managers should do the same. Technical divers are the explorers that dive beyond the accepted limits of normal or ‘recreational’ diving. They use an unusual combination of equipment and skills to do so and frequently find themselves in underwater environments that are more dangerous, but equally, more rewarding than those swum by recreational divers. Ingrid Lotze is one of very few female technical divers in SA. Drawing on her story about her 103m dive, she argues that the sport has much to teach management about taking calculated risks and thriving in challenging times.
Diving deeper and staying longer - beyond recreational limits of 40m (which requires a deep dive certification), taught Ingrid and Gavin to apply a technical diver mindset that has stuck:-
1. Radical responsibility – There’s no buddy system and blaming others, every decision is yours to own.
2. Intentional patience – Fast decisions kill. The right actions at the right time save lives.
3. Relentless precision – Close enough is never good enough when your life depends on the details.
4. Calm over chaos – Fear and panic create errors. Stay centered, no matter what.
5. Prevention over reaction – Avoiding problems is always easier than fixing them.
6. Carry only what truly matters. Eliminate inefficiency but also have necessary contingencies.
7. Save our seas.
Discernment as a discipline, Intentionality and finding enough s overwhelmed people into happy high performers. Lessons from 103m down is a journey into a different world and yet it applies to everyone's lives.
